Fifteen years ago I went on the first of many visits to Friuli Venezia Giulia a region In the northeast of Italy bordering Austria, Slovenia, the Veneto and the Adriatic Sea.
This region is full of magnificent landscapes from ocean to mountains, lakes and rivers and two great historical cities Trieste and Udine. But what truly sets Friuli apart is that they produce Italy’s best white wines.

The white varietals grown throughout Friuli include Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Friulano, Picolit, Verduzzo, Prosecco, Ribolla Gialla, Malvasia, Riesling and Pinot Bianco.
Friuli Venezia Giulia’s reputation as a wine region essentially depends on a select group of quality conscious, small scale wine makers.
My all-time favorite is Jermann. I had the opportunity on an early trip to visit the winery and have a private tour with Silvio Jermann’s father.Silvio is the man who changed Italian wine history and created a new era in white vinification. The winery balances tradition and innovation while maintaining an enduring respect for the unique terroir.
The wineries two most famous wines are the Vintage Tunina and W…Dreams.
Vintage Tunina is a blend os Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Ribolla Gialla, Malvasia and Picolit. This wine has been referred to as the most extraordinary meditation wine in existence, not in the passive sense wine to drink while meditating but the active sense. It is a wine that makes you meditate.
Try this with pasta, shellfish, mature hard cheese and the regions famed prosciutto from San Danielle.
W…Dreams
100% Chardonnay
Is another masterpiece of the Jermann winery. Dedicated to U’2s “Where the streets have no name".
The name has been interpreted many times over the years but signifies “Where dreams have no end”
Foods that go well with this are pasta, risotto, fish and shellfish
Salute
